The territory of Huchin (now known as the East Bay, CA) is the homeland of the Ohlone people. The Ohlone are composed of six nations including Lisjan, Karkin, Bay Miwok, Plains Miwok, Delta Yokurt, and Napian (Patwin). The Ohlone have lived here for thousands of years, cultivating reciprocal relationships with the earth and developing powerful cultural practices across hundreds of generations.
The Ohlone have survived over two centuries of genocide and colonization. The Spanish invaded in the late 1700s, stealing land and inflicting incredible atrocities including enslavement at Mission San Jose and Mission Dolores. Survivors faced extermination policies by the United States that forced families to isolate themselves and conceal their identities, leading to the loss of much cultural knowledge. Today, the Lisjan community remains diverse and vibrant through projects like the Sogorea Te’ Land Trust and Chochenyo language program.
Returning and rematriating land is an important movement aimed at generating access to traditional ceremony grounds for healing and spiritual renewal. Support the rematriation of the land and find ways to take action alongside the Ohlone through the resources below.
